Can Russia really be attractive globally without being a successful partner in the regional context?

If Trenin is right that Russia has failed both in its Western and Eurasian ambitions - how can it then suceed by reaching out proactively to the non-West?

Is not effective participation in overall globalization a necessary condition for being attractive also to BRICs and SCO countries?

Most other global actors nowadays avoid strategies of either-or.

Important set of polls undertaken by PEW research in Russia on NATO as a threat, on perceptions of the WEst, on confidence in Putin generally, as regards Ukraine, on economic dev in Russia, on Ukraine joining..

A very convincing argument in favour of a soft power approach in combination with a firm but nonagressive hard security posture.

The message to Russia? For the time being one very clear to the Russian leadership and a completely different one to the Russian people.

Should we not be more cautious when projecting trends based on very short term data?
