Handbook on EU and security - In paperback on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. (320 pages) and  also as e-book

Why would you need the Handbook on EU and Security?

  • The Handbook on EU and Security is written by one single author (not another compilation of chapters written by different loosely coordinated contributors)
  • It helps to give you the frame of reference necessary to form your own opinion on the basis of the rich empirical material available on this website (which is structured as the book) and constantly updated, often in real time.
  • This frame of reference has been developed through hundreds of interviews inside the EU institutions and with member state representatives
  • It has been tested in a number of courses involving practitioners from inside and outside the EU on higher and lower levels
  • The book contains a well developed index and a large bibliography and the e-book version of course allows online search
  • The book is systematically written to help your generic overview rather than focussing on  factual detail which might be changing
  • And it is the only book of its kind on the market which is being updated online for free through this website with several million page views in its first year
  • It is kept alive and kicking through a Twitter feed with now 42000 followers.
  • I also enjoy several thousand contacts with a large number of high level experts and officials from around the world on Linkedin and Facebook.
  • This is the book which I would have appreciated when preparing my application to work with the EU, when working as EU Ambassador to the international organisations in Vienna, when coordinating external security policy work in the European Commission.
  • And it is a book which I constantly use when preparing more specific case study papers based on the understanding that you need to zoom out in order to get the energy and purpose necessary to zoom in in order to solve a specific problem
  • Currently great bargain on Amazon.com for the paperback version!
  • Also the e-book version is very affordable and an excellent companion when you need on-the-road inspiration for a comprehensive understanding of security situations.

The handbook on   the European Union and security was launched in paperback and e-book version in late May 2015. It was  introduced and discussed at several seminars in Stockholm, Brussels et cetera during the early autumn. Throughout the year it has formed the basis for the current website.

FAQ from my readers: Who should be the overall lead in EU external action. Which is your view?

Main thoughts in the EU-Security Handbook have now been presented and discussed in Austin (Texas), Bratislava (EU-NATO-seminar), Stockholm (FHS), Brussels (CEPS) and Rome (CSDP maritime security course) in the last half year.  London (House of Lords evidence session on EU Global Strategy) and again Brussels/Bruges second half of November. So grateful for all interest!

@londil @FBAFolke I should add that your handbook "The EU and security" is excellent, have gotten it from Amazon.de

Is this a first? @londil Thoroughly integrated approach to a hugely complex issue incorporating a book, a website & Twitter feed. Brilliant!

A tool to situate the EU Strategic review and the upcoming EU Global Strategy in a coherent conceptual framework. In combination with this website also a way to systematically link to different cases in real time.

in full synergy with the structure of this website!

The structure of the book and the website - a one stop shop for security-related analysis, news and documents.

As further illustration: a see-the-links tool embedded in many pages on this website using the structure and linking to the handbook

To quote, liberally, one of the most famous speeches in the UK House of Commons of all times: The EU may have a desk chair (the resources), it may know in which direction to face it (strategy and intelligence collection) but what if, (as Charlie Brown) it does not know how to unfold it (training) and even worse is not aware that there is one out in the garden storage (comprehensive approach).

This is in short what my book is about.
